I told you I would take a break from all the baked goods I’ve been giving you lately!

Of course I did mention I would give you a vegetable recipe…and here we are with milkshakes. To rest my case, it is Thursday which means it’s practically Friday which means it’s the weekend and the weekends aren’t meant for vegetables. They are meant for creamy, chocolatey milkshakes.
My run on sentences are the reason why I never made it as a journalism major. And my issue with paying attention to detail. Joey sends me a message everytime TNK launches a new recipe with: TNK has a typo blah blah blah. I think I am just meant to be a science major. And baker. And milkshake drinker.

I am a zerts girl at heart, what can I say. (side note, zerts=desserts, learned this word from the ever talented and funny Aziz Ansari from Parks and Recreation) So the Recipe Redux challenged us to make a tea infused recipe this month. And to be honest it had me stumped. My original thought was some sort of tea flavored oatmeal. Then the heat wave of summer took that idea away.
And that’s how these milkshakes came about. The sudden heat wave + my incessent need to have something chocolate in the kitchen at all times. The good news? These are healthy!! Shocker. I know.

The other good news?! These don’t taste like your typical “health” food. These shakes came out so creamy and decadent it’s the perfect choice for your summer dessert. The chai tea gave a nice little zing while pairing lovely with the rich chocolate flavor.
You will need to brew your tea a few hours prior to making these. Yes, there’s a chilling step which is vital and takes patience. I reccomend brewing your almond milk + chai tea bags the night before and allowing the mixture to chill in the fridge overnight

Then it’s breakfast time! Aka milkshake time. You will achieve the creamy and thick texture of this base by blending VERY RIPE FROZEN bananas with the chilled chai tea mix. This alone is delicous, and resembles creamy ice cream. So refreshing, so delish and so healthy.
Once the bananas and milk are blended you just add in your cocoa powder, cinnamon and sweetner of choice. Depending on how ripe your bananas are, you may not even need a sweetner. A little maple syrup, honey, brown sugar or chocoalte stevia will do the trick if you’re in the mood for a sweeter milkshake.
Top with granola or shaved chocolate because we could all use a lil extra chocolate in our lives.

Chocolate Chai Tea Milkshakes
- Yield: 1–2 people 1x
Ingredients
- 1 cup vanilla almond milk (any milk works)
- 2 chai tea bags
- 2 large, overripe, FROZEN bananas*
- 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tsp sweetner of choice (maple syrup, brown sugar, etc)
Instructions
- In a small pot heat your almond milk over the stove until it just comes to a boil. Remove from heat and place your tea bags in the milk to brew.
- Place the milk in the refrigerator, with the tea bags, to chill for 3 hours or let sit overnight.
- Remove tea bags from milk and blend bananas with chai milk in a high powered blender until a creamy consistency forms. This may take about 3-4 minutes depending on your blender.
- Add in the rest of your ingredients and blend until smooth. The shake should be thick and creamy, and not super liquidy.
- Serve immediatley and garnish with shaved chocolate, granola, whip cream (yum) or toppings of choice!
Notes
Make sure your bananas are large and overripe. If using medium sized bananas, I reccomend using 3. Before freezing your bananas I reccomend cutting them into small pieces to making the blending process easier!
